Esses centros de dados funcionariam de forma semelhante aos data centers em terra, mas seriam alimentados por energia solar captada diretamente no espaço. Na semana passada, a Anthropic concordou em utilizar toda a capacidade computacional das instalações Colossus 1 da SpaceX, em Memphis, e manifestou interesse em colaborar no desenvolvimento de vários gigawatts de centros de dados orbitais. No Google, a iniciativa é conduzida pelo Projeto Suncatcher, programa de pesquisa que busca conectar satélites movidos a energia solar equipados com as Unidades de Processamento Tensorial (TPUs), chips desenvolvidos pela empresa para acelerar tarefas de inteligência artificial.
