Agora no g1 A Nova Zelândia enfrentou um terremoto de magnitude 5,9, na Ilha Sul do país, na noite desta quinta-feira (16). Segundo autoridades neozelandesas, o epicentro do tremor foi localizado a cerca de 40 km ao norte da cidade de Te Anau, que é a porta de entrada para o popular destino turístico de Fiordland. A Agência Nacional de Gestão de Emergências da Nova Zelândia (NEMA) chegou a emitir um alerta de tsunami para as áreas costeiras do país, mas ele foi cancelado cerca de uma hora depois. Embora o alerta de tsunami tenha sido cancelado, a NEMA afirmou que espera que as áreas costeiras experimentem "correntes fortes e incomuns e ondas imprevisíveis na costa". O comunicado diz que as pessoas deveriam sair da água, afastar-se das praias e manter-se longe de portos, marinas e rios. Não houve relatos imediatos de feridos ou danos. Fiorde localizado na região de Fiordland, na Nova Zelândia Candida Savage/Nature Geoscience Maylene Puyat, moradora local e gerente de plantão do Hotel Fiordland em Te Anau, disse à Reuters que o terremoto foi "um pouco forte" e que sentiu o tremor por um minuto. "No hotel, está tremendo, mas nada se mexeu lá dentro. As paredes estavam definitivamente se movendo", disse ela. Outro morador disse ao jornal local "Otago Daily Times" que o tremor do terremoto foi "longo e forte" e soou "como um trem".
