As autoridades disseram que não há mais expectativa de encontrar sobreviventes. A embarcação naufragou na noite de sábado (18), poucas horas depois de deixar Georgetown, capital da Guiana. O trajeto seguia pelo mar antes de entrar em um rio com destino a Port Kaituma, no interior do país. Segundo o primeiro-ministro, Mark Phillips, 76 pessoas foram resgatadas com vida e outras 53 foram encontradas mortas. A partir de agora, equipes de mergulhadores da Guiana e da Guiana Francesa vão concentrar os trabalhos na localização de mais corpos. As buscas começaram na madrugada de domingo (19), após as autoridades receberem um pedido de socorro. O governo ampliou a área de procura para cerca de 2.100 quilômetros quadrados. De acordo com Phillips, estimativas oficiais apontam que a balsa transportava 179 pessoas — número superior aos 133 passageiros registrados na lista oficial de embarque. A diferença levanta suspeitas de que havia pessoas viajando sem registro. O acidente é considerado uma das maiores tragédias recentes da Guiana, país de língua inglesa na América do Sul com população inferior a 1 milhão de habitantes. Port Kaituma fica na região de Essequibo, área de difícil acesso no interior da floresta. Para chegar ao destino, as embarcações percorrem um trecho pelo mar antes de entrar em um rio. A região de Essequibo, com cerca de 160 mil quilômetros quadrados e rica em petróleo, é administrada pela Guiana há mais de um século, mas é reivindicada pela Venezuela, que mantém uma disputa territorial com o país. Em nota divulgada nesta terça-feira, o Ministério das Relações Exteriores da Venezuela manifestou solidariedade às vítimas e afirmou acompanhar a situação. O governo venezuelano desejou sucesso às equipes envolvidas nas operações de resgate.
