O Irã rejeitou uma proposta de cessar-fogo proposta pelo presidente dos EUA, Donald Trump, levada pelo primeiro-ministro do Iraque, noticiou o jornal The New York Times citando autoridades iranianas e iraquianas nesta quinta (23).
A viagem do primeiro-ministro iraquiano, Ali al-Zaidi a Teerã ocorreu após a visita dele à Casa Branca, em reunião com Trump. No Irã, Ali al-Zaidi teria se reunido com o presidente do Irã, Masoud Pezeshkian, com o principal negociador iraniano, general Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, e com o ministro das Relações Exteriores, Abbas Araghchi, segundo a imprensa local.
Os detalhes da proposta não foram divulgados. Entretanto, autoridade iranianas informaram ao jornal que o governo não tinha interesse em um acordo temporário que não resolvesse o controle do Estreito de Ormuz, rota estratégica para o transporte de petróleo.
Em entrevista à televisão estatal iraniana, Araghchi afirmou que Al-Zaidi compartilhou com Teerã suas "visões e impressões" após a passagem por Washington, mas disse que o problema entre os dois países não é a falta de intermediários. Segundo o ministro, Irã e Estados Unidos já contam com mediadores suficientes para transmitir mensagens.

Ainda de acordo com o The New York Times, autoridades iranianas avaliam que o conflito pode se ampliar caso Trump cumpra ameaças recentes de atacar Teerã e outras infraestruturas consideradas críticas. Nesse cenário, segundo duas autoridades ouvidas pelo jornal, o Irã poderia expandir suas ações na região, incluindo ataques contra Tel Aviv e o uso de aliados houthis para tentar interromper a navegação no estreito de Bab al-Mandab, importante corredor marítimo no Mar Vermelho.
Nesta quinta, os EUA lançaram a 13ª noite de ataques contra o Irã desde o fim do acordo de cessar-fogo assinado em junho entre os dois países.
Nas últimas semanas, os confrontos entre os dois países se intensificaram.
